Wild Strawberries

Wild Strawberries

  • Hands shuffling sheets -
  • waking from a dream
  • redreamt – how many times?
  • The given gone -
  • the wild strawberries plucked
  • from the woods wirey
  • patch of grass
  • parted by tender hands.
  • And yet,
  • and still - the sweetness lingers
  • on lips cracked
  • by fifty winters dry chill.
  • That such things ever are found
  • now gnaw and knot as miracles
  • gone missing do -
  • within each craved uncovering
  • the shadow of absence blooms.
  • Entangled by this hunger
  • I forget -
  • it was the abiding given
  • giftedness
  • that sweetened the dewy nest.
